I'm
an American expatriot, living in Normandy (more precisely the North Cotentin, and even more
precisely, the Val de Saire) and I teach English -- to whoever wants to learn.
I have a Master's degree in Linguistics from the
University of Florida,
(and almost a doctorate). I have taught English as a second language
for most of the past 20 years in the
Academic Spoken English (ASE) program.
in Gainesville; and the last 6 years,
mostly at FIM in Cherbourg, France.

So what else do you do?
When I'm not teaching English (and even when I am), computers fascinate me,
and creating web sites, and cgi programs is one of my favorite activities. I founded
a web development company in 1994, and created and managed numerous websites until 1999.
After that I developed the web site for ASE program, and wrote a fairly large suite of
web apps for administering ASE. I have also written an open source program called
WP Whois Proxy which is hosted by SourceForge.net

So what are you doing in France anyway?
Good question! The shortest answer is in French:
Cherchez la femme.
But that would gloss over the fact that I was already here when we met..
The fact is, I came to France kind of accidentally in 1972, and spent
most of the next 12 years making candles! Really! Candles!
I don't know exactly why, but I felt "at home" here, right away. I fell in love with the countryside, the stones, the architecture, the people -- especially one woman -- and I even learned to tolerate the weather!
Then in 1984, we (wife, daughter, and I) went back to the US for a while.. a "while" that turned into 20 years! But now I'm back!
And here's where I live. The pics might give you an idea why we wanted to come back! Once I realized that the ability to speak (American) English had become something desireable in France, and since I had the training, degrees and experience to teach there, we came flying back!

Et quoi d'autre?
Quand je ne suis pas en train d'enseigner l'anglais (et même quand je le fais)
les ordinateurs me fascinent, et je passe beaucoup de mon temps (trop!) à faire des sites web
et à écrire des petits logiciels CGI. J'ai créé
une compagnie de développement web en 1994 et administré un bon nombre de sites jusqu'en 1999.
Ensuite, j'ai crée le site de l'ASE et une assez grande collection d'applications CGI
pour l'administration de l'ASE. J'ai aussi écrit un programme open source qui s'appelle
WP Whois Proxy, hébergé à SourceForge.net.

Alors, qu'est-ce qui t'amène en France?
Bonne question! La réponse la plus brève serait: Cherchez la femme. Mais, cela ne dirait pas que j'etais déjà en France quand on s'est rencontré.. En fait, je suis venu en France en 1972 un peu par accident, et j'ai passé la plupart des 12 années suivantes à fabriquer des bougies. Eh oui! Des bougies!
Je ne sais pas exactement pourquoi, mais je me sentais "chez moi" ici. Je suis tombé amoureux du paysage, des pierres, de l'architecture, des gens, -- d'une femme surtout -- et j'ai même appris à tolérer le vent et la pluie!
Puis, en 1984 nous (ma femme, ma fille, et moi) sommes rentrés aux Etats Unis pour quelque temps -- "quelque temps" qui s'est transformé en 20 ans!
Voici chez moi. Les photos vous feront peut-être comprendre pourquoi nous avions envie de rentrer. Quand je me suis rendu compte que l'anglais (américain) était devenu désirable en France, et compte tenu du fait que j'avais la formation, les diplômes et l'expérience pour l'enseigner ici, nous nous sommes dépêchés de rentrer. Et, me revoilà!
